Scaling is our third tool out of the Solution-Focus toolbox. After establishing a platform where we determine a contract of what the client wants, we moved to the future perfect as the end result and finish line for coaching. To move from where we are to where we want to be, we use the scaling tool to determine where we are now. The client is asked to scale himself/herself on a scale of 0 to 10 where 0 represents the pits and where 10 represents the perfect future. This is a subjective scale and does not need to be argued. Once the position on the scale is determined it is important to investigate from the client how come he/she is on the “n” position and not at 0. What was done to get to “n” ? What is being done to remain at “n” ? What would it take to move from “n” to “n”+1 ?

Future Perfect

The future perfect is our second Solution-Focus tool. Here we want to determine what the client’s solution would look like if all things were perfect. “Suppose during your sleep tonight a miracle happened and your problem was perfectly solved without your knowledge. How would you know that a miracle has happened when you wake up in the morning ? What will be the first sign that a miracle has happened ? What will your loved ones see in you as an indication that a miracle has happened to you ?”

Building Platforms

Building platforms is the start of our solution-focus conversation. Here we want to establish what a client wants of us. We start with a question like: “What brought you here today ?” We build a platform for a coaching contract by asking questions like: “What is your expectations of this conversation ?” or “How will you know that our meeting today has been beneficial to you ?”
