Scaling is our third tool out of the Solution-Focus toolbox. After establishing a platform where we determine a contract of what the client wants, we moved to the future perfect as the end result and finish line for coaching. To move from where we are to where we want to be, we use the scaling tool to determine where we are now. The client is asked to scale himself/herself on a scale of 0 to 10 where 0 represents the pits and where 10 represents the perfect future. This is a subjective scale and does not need to be argued. Once the position on the scale is determined it is important to investigate from the client how come he/she is on the “n” position and not at 0. What was done to get to “n” ? What is being done to remain at “n” ? What would it take to move from “n” to “n”+1 ?
